Excelsior Class
Originally dubbed the "Great Experiment," the Excelsior project was launched in 2285 as a testbed for the unsuccessful transwarp drive development project. The ship, later outfitted with normal warp drives, became the prototype for the numerous Excelsior class starships built over the next several decades Among these was the third starship to bear the name Enterprise (NCC-1701-C). A slightly modified Excelsior-Class has upgraded impulse, ramscoop and sensor technolgy. The Excelsior Class is the most successful Federation starship class, serving from 2285 to the present.
